How to Pray Istikhara: Authentic Sunnah Step-by-Step Method

Salatul Istikhara (the prayer for seeking goodness) is a sacred practice designed to bring clarity, peace of mind, and divine assistance when making important life decisions. Whether choosing between two lawful career opportunities, contemplating marriage, or considering a relocation, understanding the authentic method ensures that your worship adheres strictly to prophetic guidance.

Preparation: Intention and Wudu

Before beginning the prayer, ensure physical and ritual purity by performing complete ablution (Wudu). Formulate a sincere intention in your heart (Niyyah) that you are performing two units of voluntary prayer (Salatul Istikhara) seeking Allah's guidance regarding a specific permissible matter. Cleanse your mind of preconceived stubbornness so that you approach your Lord with genuine openness to His will.

Step 1: Praying the Two Rak'ahs of Nafl

  1. First Rak'ah: Begin with the opening Takbeer ("Allahu Akbar"), recite the opening Thana, seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, and recite Surah Al-Fatihah. Many classical scholars, including Imam an-Nawawi, recommend following Surah Al-Fatihah with Surah Al-Kafirun (Quran 109) to affirm pure monotheism. Complete the bowing (Ruku) and prostrations (Sujud) with tranquility and mindfulness.
  2. Second Rak'ah: Stand for the second unit, recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas (Quran 112) emphasizing absolute reliance on Allah's perfection. Complete the second unit, sit for the final Tashahhud, recite the Darood Ibrahim, and complete the prayer with the Taslim (peace to the right and left).

Step 2: Supplication and Personal Mention

Immediately after concluding the prayer, remain facing the Qiblah in a state of reverence. Raise your hands to make dua. Begin by praising Allah Almighty and invoking peace and blessings upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then recite the verified Dua e Istikhara recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.

When you reach the phrase "hadhal-amra" ("this matter"), pause mentally or verbally specify your decision—for example: "O Allah, if You know that marrying [person's name] or accepting this job offer is good for me..." Repeat this focus in the second half of the supplication when asking Allah to divert any harmful outcome from your path.

Step 3: Moving Forward with Trust (Tawakkul)

A widespread misconception is that Istikhara must result in a vivid dream, a visual color (such as green for good or red for bad), or a sudden supernatural revelation. Classical Islamic scholars emphasize that the primary fruit of Istikhara is an internal inclination, the easing of circumstances, or the gentle removal of obstacles if the matter is good for you.

Proceed with responsible practical steps and consultation (Istisharah). If obstacles continue to arise naturally, or if your heart remains deeply settled against the choice, recognize that Allah's decree may be protecting you from unseen difficulty. In every circumstance, the believer rests in the assurance that Allah's choice is superior to human desire.

The Essential Role of Psychological Surrender

When performing the Istikhara prayer, the seeker must approach Allah with complete neutrality, shedding personal prejudices and emotional attachments. The true test of faith in Istikhara lies in accepting whatever outcome manifests—even if it differs from initial inclinations—confident that divine foresight far exceeds limited human understanding.
