The final moments on the prayer rug—immediately following Durood Ibrahim and before turning the face in Tasleem—are among the most sacred, powerful windows of answered supplication in the entire life of a Muslim. Having stood, bowed, prostrated, praised Allah, and sent blessings upon the Messenger ﷺ, the servant is now in full divine favor. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was so emphatic regarding the supplication at this specific moment that some early scholars considered it an obligatory component of Salah.
The Hadith of the Four Great Tribulations
Abu Hurairah and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1377; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 588): "When one of you finishes the final Tashahhud, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying:"
English Transliteration
"Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-Maseehid-Dajjal."
Translation & Theological Commentary
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil trial of the False Messiah (Al-Maseeh ad-Dajjal)."
This fourfold petition covers all realms of human danger: 1) Jahannam: Safety from eternal damnation; 2) The Grave: Safety from the constriction, darkness, and questioning of the Barzakh; 3) Trials of Life and Death: Safety from lusts, doubts, financial crises, and dying upon disbelief; 4) Fitnah of Dajjal: Safety from the greatest deception in human history, where falsehood masquerades as miracles.
Classical Scholarly & Spiritual Reflections
Imam Tawus, one of the greatest Tabieen, was so vigilant regarding this prophetic command that when his son finished praying, he asked: "Did you recite this supplication before the Tasleem?" When his son replied no, Tawus commanded: "Repeat your prayer!" (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 590).
The Beloved Personal Dua of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr
- The Prayer of the Truthful: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq asked the Prophet ﷺ for a prayer to recite in his Salah, and the Prophet taught him (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 834): "Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman katheera, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa Ant, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indik, warhamni, innaka Antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem."
- Make Sincere Personal Petitions: You may also ask for forgiveness, marital peace, and health before the final Tasleem.
- Conclude with Dignified Tasleem: Turn the head completely to the right saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah", then to the left.
Common Pitfalls and Misconceptions to Avoid
Rushing to say the Salam without pausing to recite these protective supplications leaves the soul vulnerable to the tribulations of life and death.
Spiritual Vigilance in the Final Supplication
Seeking protection from the trials of life, the torment of the grave, and the deception of the Dajjal immediately before concluding prayer equips the believer with psychological resilience. The prayer does not end in detached mysticism; it ends by steeling the soul against the acute moral and existential hazards awaiting the believer in the bustling marketplace and society.
